Emsworth and the surrounding area:
Nestled on the coastal border with West Sussex, Emsworth has developed over three centuries from a small commercial harbour, which then developed into a specialist oyster fishing industry. Emsworth had a local serviceable fleet of oyster dredgers most, if not all were built locally at the Emsworth shipyard. Invariably there dredging exploits were best rewarded off the French cost and in the 1880's it was recorded that a skipper by the name of Hazle (coincidence!) of Nile St, Emsworth was lost with all hands in the storm.
More recently, Emsworth has developed from a small coastal hamlet to a medium sized town. Emsworth has managed to retain its traditional atmosphere which is reflected in its thriving comprehensive range of shops, most of which offer a personal individual service, and some of which have evolved spanning several generations of the same family.
Emsworth is situated on the East Hampshire/West Sussex coastal plain, with Chichester Harbour linking with Langstone Harbour to encompass one of the most popular areas for maritime leisure facilities on the central south coast as an inland protected coastal inlet, it is only eclipsed in size by Poole Harbour. It is situated virtually equidistant between Portsmouth and Chichester, and is a few minutes away from the M(A27). Emsworth has its own railway station which is situated on the Portsmouth Brighton Victoria line.
The main architectural span of Emsworth covers the last four centuries, and there are some wonderful examples of several important individual character houses situated within the central part of Emsworth.
In recent years, much of the town centre has the added protection of being Conservation Listed, and the gradual growth of the town, combined with the retained characteristics of the existing houses, has resulted in several roads encompassing a mixture of brick and rendered Georgian and Queen Anne houses which promote the character and individual appeal of Emsworth.
Over more recent years, there have been several famous names who have left there fondness and identification with Emsworth clearly recorded. Such names as P G Woodhouse and the American multi millionaire J P Morgan who loved to sail into Emsworth Harbour. Numerous TV and film personalities have also fallen for the individual charm and appeal of Emsworth over the last 50 years.
Many local people have their high opinion of Emsworth endorsed by numerous visitors who feel that the town provides a rare combination blend of the expectant facilities of a reasonable size town, reflected in the form of a traditional picturesque coastal environment.
